Vietnam Veterans Memorial
The Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Angel Fire, New Mexico, was the first major memorial in the United States dedicated to Vietnam veterans, preceding the national memorial in Washington, D.C., by over a decade. Established in 1971 by Dr. Victor and Jeanne Westphall, it was built in honor of their son, Marine 1st Lt. David Westphall, and sixteen of his fellow Marines who were killed in a 1968 ambush. Perched at 8,500 feet in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the site is recognized by Congress as a "memorial of national significance.

Sitting at an elevation of 8,200 feet, the 2,400-acre lake is a popular high-mountain retreat for fishing, boating, and wildlife viewing against the backdrop of Wheeler Peak.
